About Me

My photo
I have been a racing fan for nearly 30 years, first starting when my grandmother (who lived in Louisville, Kentucky) took me to the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby at historic Churchill Downs. But it has been in the last 20 years that my interest has turned more "serious" as a handicapper.

January 6 Results / January 7 Selections

Another winning day!  Two days of Gulfstream.....back-to-back winning days!  Go me!
Travelin Man scores in the 3rd - New Member (double investment) scores in the 4th!

    1-Gulfstream                6.5f       Claiming                                  1 – Maybelle Slew                   5/2
An automatic selection at Gulfstream, Arlington, and just about anywhere they stable their horses……when a Frank Calabrese owned horse is coming first off the claim for trainer Nick Canani – LOOK OUT!  Such is the case with Maybelle Slew.  My only reservation is that Team Calabrese is running an entry and the “other” runner is NOT first off the claim.  But, I’ll put my faith in Frank’s Team, and who ever they run, that’s the selection.
      5-Gulfstream    Turf      8.5f       Maiden Claiming                     4 – Boat                                   12/1*
This race cries out for an unknown quantity to win the race.  The make-up of the race is dominated by (a) front-runners who cannot hold on – and the presence of so many of them will only aid the cause that this happens again.  There are also several runners who have not been on the grass, or are proven losers.  So, the ideal selection would be a lightly raced runner who can rally – with good turf breeding.  Enter Boat – at 12/1 Boat has only been out once.  In that MSW race at Aqueduct he was dead last, and in spite of moderate fractions – in his debut mind you – he rallied for fourth.  In addition to a perfect fit for the profile necessary, AND dropping from MSW to Maiden Claiming – the most powerful drop in racing, Boat goes out for trainer Thomas Bush who scores with 25% of his 2nd time starters at an excellent $2.61 ROI (for $2 invested).  Bush droppers first time tagged win at a 29% clip, and first blinkers (being added today) is a 21% angle with an unreal $4.71 ROI! – Bombs away!  Can we even get double-digits, or will astute handicappers see the same thing we see?
      6-Gulfstream                8f         AOC                                         6 – Sweet and Sour Nina         10/1
This looks like a tough race – but there appears to be a LOT of speed in here, and particularly a lot of speed from horses stretching out to this super-long one mile “sprint.”  One-turn mile races are nearly always won by runners who have ALREADY won a one-turn mile.  Such is the case for Sweet and Sour Nina who is 5/3-2-0 at the distance.  Even more importantly, she is a Horse-for-the-Course with a Gulfstream record of 4/3-0-1.  At a price, and with a closing style, she’s the upset selection!
      8-Gulfstream                8f         Allowance                               8 – Hammock Beach                8/1
Just the kind of runner that after they cross the wire first you shake your head and say, “Now how did a Todd Pletcher trained, John Velasquez ridden horse win and pay double digits?”  Such is the case here – there are some legitimate contenders who will most certainly, and deservedly, be well bet.  But here you’ve got a Pletcher first-time-3-year-old.  He’s superbly bred for the distance, and has a sharp recent work.  Look out!  I’m on board though J
